I used to be particularly interested in sparrow hawks. It was really when I began to climb trees. I suppose age 11 or 12 or something like that, because sparrow hawks nested in all the woods around my home. I was interested in birds in general but I spent probably more time on sparrow hawks and finches than any other birds. . . . At that time I was really limited to within cycling distance of my home, because my parents didn’t have a car and everywhere I wanted to go I had to go on a bike. . . .
