“All right,” Winston called. “Everyone calm down!”

He was standing on a chair, facing the guests. “Since none of you is interested in reading out loud,” he said, “we’ll do math problems.”

Groans sounded around the room.

“Winston?” Hildy tugged on his jacket. “May I speak with you for a minute?”

“Not now, Hildy.” Winston looked around the crowd. “Okay. Let’s start with something easy. What’s twelve times twelve?”

Three guests at the back slipped out of the room.
