A great idea is only an idea if it’s not ultimately coupled to a plan for executing it. The moonshot entrepreneur may be audacious, but he’s also pragmatic. So in the context of enabling the greatest good for the greatest number of people, how will you begin to think about the design of your moonshot?

Whatever it is that you seek to accomplish, you must begin with the end goal in mind and work backward as you build your plan. You create the future from the future, not the past. Knowing that your criteria may be completely different than mine, there are a few things I always look for in a moonshot opportunity. One point, though, on which there is no question, is that there is no shortage of big problems in desperate need of big solutions.

It is a perennial observation that we live in revolutionary times. When has the human race ever not been in some form of upheaval, boiling over with contradictions and chaotic forces running amok? Peruse the literature of any age and you will read the same refrain: a world in profound crisis manifested in desperation, cynicism, violence, conflict, fear, and doubt alternating with hope and belief, the yin and yang, the good together with the evil—all are so entwined at times that it is difficult to distinguish the demons from the angels. So what is one to attack first? Disease? Pestilence? Hunger? Illiteracy? Substance abuse? Environmental crises? Economic opportunity? Clean water? Safety, security, and wellbeing? Corruption? Poverty? Each and every one of these issues impacts billions of people globally each and every day.
