Settling to sleep

How you say goodnight to your child and handle nighttime waking plays an important part in encouraging them to settle down and sleep independently.

A comforting routine can be tucking them in, saying goodnight, then returning for “whispers” and lights off as they settle. Whispering messages of love creates an intimacy that sends them to sleep feeling cherished.

At 18 months to two years, if your child wakes, go to their room quietly, but do not pick them up or move them to your room. Wait a minute or two to see if they settle. If you feel they need help, spend a few minutes talking to them gently. Say it is still night and sleep time. From about three years, if they wake from a bad dream, reassure them calmly that you understand it was scary but you are there and their room is safe.
