When indeed? Never, if I got my way. One sister in my lover’s bed is enough.

Chapter Twenty

Stories

We learned Harriet struck first by having Percy’s bank account emptied while we were still abroad, nor was that all that was amiss. Stepmother’s letter campaign against us did what she intended. We were social pariahs. However, even though she did not intend to help me, Stepmother came to our aid through not knowing which way to turn her anger. She could not abide ill being said of her daughter, so she put it abroad that Harriet was a less than congenial wife to Percy as the reason for his attachment to Claire.

Percy had friends who were happy to defy convention and allowed us to stay with them. Within the week, Percy found a place for us in Somers Town, not far from St. Pancras and close to my old house in The Polygon. There, Claire and I were introduced to those whose names I knew but had not the pleasure of meeting.

Claire particularly, but I as well, loved it that we had such lively company, and dear Fan joined us when she could. When I cast my mind into the past, I find I remember our first dinner party as though waking up the day after.
