All through supper, they talked about Momo. The little monkey lay curled up in his basket nearby, fast asleep with his tummy full.

The next morning, the children were up early, although it was a no-school day being Saturday.

Geno looked in the basket. “Momo’s still sleeping. Come on! Let’s make him breakfast.”

After they had prepared his food, they started feeding him.

“This is such fun!” Geno said gaily. “Your turn to feed him.”

“He’s opening his eyes. They’re so grey,” said Alid, looking down at Momo. The little monkey ate up all the mashed banana. Geno then gave Momo the bottle, which he sucked hungrily.

“Are you two ready?” called Mum. “I want you in the car with that monkey. We have to get him to the orphanage early so the keeper can settle him in.”

“But, Mum—,” pleaded Geno.

“No whining. Into the car with you.” Mum picked up her kiondo and opened the car door. “We have to drive all the way to Lang’ata. Tsk! There’ll be so much traffic,” complained Mum, starting the car. She drove up to the gate.

PUTT. PUTT. Putt. The car stopped. Mum turned the key many times, but the car would not start.

“Now what’s wrong with this car?” she muttered, throwing up her hands. “We’ll never get there.”
