Sex was intended to be pleasurable and procreational, a surrender of our nakedness, differences, and shame to another person in a lifelong, committed, growing relationship. But it doesn’t always turn out that way. It didn’t for me. Nevertheless, I still believe what I have written about sex in this chapter. I believe it even more passionately than I did before my marriage was broken.

In the most masterful sermon I have ever heard preached, Peter Hiett described marriage:

The marriage covenant and the sacrament of that covenant takes two different, incomplete, sinful people and binds them together in nakedness, despite the shame, as a picture of Christ and His church…. What sheer and absolute insanity to vow yourself unconditionally to another fallen, sinful, needy person! You’d have to be crazy to get married! Yet Jesus is married…. Is He crazy? Yes! That’s the point. He’s crazy in love with you, and He is bound and determined to show you. He’s bound Himself to us fallen people in an eternal covenant, knowing full well what He’s doing. He’s crazy in love with you, “Bone of His bones and flesh of His flesh.”19
