Figure 10.24 Overview of nucleic acid and protein synthesis during the hepadnavirus replication cycle. Uncoating releases the viral genome into the nucleus (1), where the host converts it into cccDNA (2). Transcription (3) results in mRNA exported to the cytoplasm, where it is translated (4). The long pregenomic RNA is exported but not translated (5) and then encapsidated (6). Inside the capsid it is reverse transcribed (7), resulting in a particle that can be trafficked to the nucleus (8), releasing the viral genome into the nucleus where it can be converted to cccDNA (9), which is subsequently amplified (10) and used to sequence more mRNA (11). The particle can instead be trafficked to a membrane to continue the process of assembly.
