SELLING PATTERNS

If you design your own quilts then others may pay for printed or downloadable instructions to make them. Here’s a few things to consider:

Patterns can be sold at shows, or online through your own website or selling sites such as Etsy. Once you have some experience, you could also look at wholesaling printed patterns to shops or distributors.

Make sure your patterns are written in a consistent way and when you have finished, ask a fellow quilter to check through, or hire a technical editor.

Using the pricing guidelines for selling quilts, work out your costs to ensure you are making a profit for your time, materials and other outgoings.

If you want to write for magazines or books, research which publications are a good match for your style, then send a short introductory email. Give a little information about yourself and a link to a website, blog or social media (if you use them), and ask if they are accepting submissions.
