A. Cut a random wavy line.
B. Place the pink wave on the quilt along the right edge.
C. Place the purple fabric on the top of the yellow fabric and cut a wavy line.
D. Place the purple wave on the quilt along the right edge.
E. Fuse all the waves in place.
6.Put the rest of the green fabric that has the wave edge on the cutting mat right side up. Using a rotary cutter free-form cut a random wavy line along the 20˝ edge. Place the green piece on the quilt along edge of the blue piece.
7.Make sure the pieces are placed close enough together so that the white fabric beneath isn’t visible. Fuse them in place. Fig. E
Another Approach
This alternative method for creating the wave pieces works just as well as the cut-and-place method, and it doesn’t create as much waste. The only drawback is that you must make sure that your cuts along the traced lines are exact; otherwise, you may end up with gaps that allow the white fabric below to show through.
Cut a piece of craft paper 17˝ × 19˝. Use a black marker to draw 6 random wavy lines along the right 19˝ edge. Cut the craft paper apart along the drawn lines and use these as templates to cut the pieces from your fabric. Then place them on the quilt and fuse them in place.
QUILT THE WAVES
1.Quilt the waves, using the shape of the waves to guide your stitching lines.
2.Quilt the white area of the quilt.
FINISH THE QUILT
1.Cut 4 strips 2˝ × 20 from the black-and-white print and set them aside to use for the binding.
2.Fuse a layer of fusible web to the remaining piece of black-and-white print fabric. Cut a strip ⅛˝ × 20˝ from it and fuse it in place along the edge of the green fabric.
3.Fuse the false back fabric to the back side of the quilt and trim the quilt to 16˝ × 18˝.
4.Bind the quilt using the 4 black-and-white 2˝ × 20˝ strips and either my method Four-Step Binding or your favorite binding technique.
3.Add a label and a hanging sleeve to the back of the quilt.
