Generally speaking mould lines are easily dealt with and a good mould maker will also ensure that they are hidden within the detail of a model, running along the edge of a jacket or where a fur cloak meets leather armour, for example. Where they can prove a problem is when they run across the top of a smooth helmet, over the centre of a shield, or worse still, down the middle of a model’s face. Since mould lines are often very faint they are easy to clean up with a small file or by scraping a scalpel blade over the imperfection before priming the miniature.

Flashing occurs when a small amount of metal or resin is forced between mould sections during casting, resulting in a thin halo of unwanted material around the model. It is usually very thin and can be removed easily with a stiff toothbrush or a scalpel blade.

Vents and feed channels are cut into moulds to ensure that air can escape and that the molten metal or liquid resin can flow into all parts of the model. These usually fill during casting and will need removing with a craft knife or side cutters. Any detachment scars should be filed or scraped smooth with a scalpel blade.
