Setting Goals With Professional Learning

So you’ve done your best to build time into the schedule, and created an environment that invites transformational learning. Setting goals both within the organization at increments of 1, 3, and 5 years will help guide the areas of growth and the implementation of growth. As I’ve pointed out already, only certain percentages of staff will take to the change in the first year.

Part of continuing the growth of staff knowledge is to figure out how to scale past that initial percentage of trailblazers into the majority of teachers integrating at a higher level. Building in realistic timeframes while not loading the teachers up with many other initiatives is a key to this success. While our initiative and encouraging student-centered learning and differentiation with integration of technology was an important part of our district goals, it was also one of many other goals that were imposed on teachers at the same time, which clouded the vision and the timeline somewhat.

In Figure 5.1, I’ve shown what an “ideal” timeline of integration would look like with continual job-embedded support, some level of expectation from leadership, and not a lot of other initiatives going on at the same time. That means that your laggard teachers (representing 10% to 16% of staff) won’t really embrace the integration until year 4.
