The boy laughed and teased more fervently. Miskeen struck out with his legs as the whip burned his chest and forelegs with its lash.

“Yes, rear up, horse. I’ve seen you do it. Do it for me, now!”

Miskeen spun and dashed around his stall to try to get away from the unrelenting bite of the whip. He snapped at it, ran from it, kicked and struck at it, but the fiery pain would not go away. The boy laughed and leaned further into the stall.

Suddenly, there were voices from the other end of the tent and the boy hesitated and turned to see two men moving quickly toward him. In that same instant, Miskeen charged at his tormentor in fury, grabbed him by the shoulder with his teeth, pulled him over the stall door, and flung him against a wall. The boy lay deathly still.
