Chapter 9

“Found it.” Bella crawled out from under the bed and sat on the floor. She’d destroyed Han’s room looking for the information, and now she had it. The envelope also had the key and the information to the post office box as well. “Damned kid. How the hell was I supposed to find it if you hid it like that?”

She’d had to crawl into the broken bathroom window to get into the apartment. Bella didn’t mind that so much except that someone had been there before her. The entire house was emptied of nearly every piece of her good stuff. The only thing that they didn’t bother was Hannah’s things. Her room had been as nasty cleaned up as ever.

“Or it was.” Smiling, Bella got up and moved out of the trashed room, thinking she’d take a nice long shower and change into one of her dresses before going to the store. She knew the guy down there would give her cash for the food money on the card. She might be able to get her nails done, too, if she gave him a little extra.

She’d never understood the child. Hannah hadn’t just been a disappointment to her but had also been a stick in the mud when it came to having fun. Even before the thing with her being committed, she’d been sort of strange to her. If she had to do it over again, Bella might have just left her with her dead mother.

Always wanting to read instead of watching Bella’s programs with her like a good child should have, Han had been good in school and never had to have any calls from the teacher. Which, she supposed, was good, but Bella wanted her to be bad, and to be sexy like her. Even her lack of style had been a mystery to her. She preferred things to be orderly and white rather than colorful and eclectic. Bella liked color and a great deal of it. Purple and pink were her favorites.

Bella was standing in her closet when she heard the door open. She knew the voice of the one man but not the other. Pulling the door closed behind her, Bella stood in the closet with her dress in her hands as the men moved about the rooms. It wasn’t until they were in her room that she could actually understand what they were saying.

“…today, but that was a done deal even before all this. I liked the kid. Quiet and all, but that mother of hers…well, she wasn’t anyone I’d want raising me.”

“Hannah is in good hands now. We’re going to be married in a few days. I’m glad that I found her. It’s really too bad that the mother is such a piece of shit.” Bella grabbed the door to open it and tear into the man. But his next words, chilling and delivered with such calmness, had her pause. “If I ever get the opportunity to meet her, I’m going to show her just what it’s like to be beaten within an inch of her life.
