Developments in Europe

GREAT BRITAIN

In 1940 the war had compelled Bassett-Lowke to cease production of merchant-ship and liner models in order to concentrate on warships. In 1946, however, Bassett-Lowke resumed production of model trains and merchant ships and liners in all scales for public consumption. It also continued to produce recognition models for the Ministry of Defence, as did Amis, Rowley, and others, although in much smaller numbers. Existing models of ships that were no longer in existence, or were being scrapped were rendered surplus by the military, were disposed of, some by sale to the public; others were ‘requisitioned’ by individuals leaving the service, and some thrown in the trash. The last batches of 1:1200 models in government service were publicly auctioned in 1985, long after Bassett-Lowke had ceased production.
