The zone or flow state

A surprising number of elite athletes train their minds these days as much as they train their bodies. Take Phil Jackson, the legendary coach of the LA Lakers and Chicago Bulls, who took his teams to an unprecedented eleven NBA titles. Jackson’s protégés, such as Michael Jordan, learnt the secrets of meditation and attention, enabling them to make far better use of their natural talents. When performing at our peak, in sport or any other endeavour, we are in a mindful state of a very high order. Billie Jean King, one of the greatest tennis players of all time, described the zone as follows:

It almost seems as though I’m able to transport myself beyond the turmoil on the court to some place of total peace and calm ... I appreciate what my opponent is doing in a detached abstract way. Like an observer in the next room ... It is a perfect combination of [intense] action taking place in an atmosphere of total tranquillity. 3

Many athletes later come to describe such experiences as spiritual. If you recollect peak experiences in your own life then these tips will make a lot more sense.
