Reflections and Invitations: Within and Between

When the notion that the mind might not be simply a product of brain activity alone first arose for me as a student, it seemed like heresy in scientific conversations in the professional world I was living in at the time. But as a trainee in psychiatry with a research background in biochemistry, it seemed that the systems being explored ought to have some universal aspects to them, and some reciprocal influences on each other. The salmon I studied in college might be responding to changes in the salinity of the surrounding water by altering an enzyme that changed the density of particles in the fish’s bodily fluids. The fish adapted to changes in the environment, as the fish’s own nervous system was programmed to have it swim from freshwater stream to salty sea. Likewise, a person in crisis could respond to ways in which the receiver on a suicide crisis helpline communicated with compassion and connection, instilling a sense of not only trust and feeling felt in the moment, but hope for the future.
