Milton struggled to balance his account books, but things only got worse. By October of 1880, he was desperate for help.

“It is my own fault,” he said to his mother and aunt. “No matter how hard I try, I cannot make the numbers add up properly. I never was good with arithmetic.”

Fanny peered at the account books. “I can make no sense of it. Accounting is men’s work.” She looked up at Milton. “We must hire someone who can help.”

Mattie said, “Do you remember Mr. Lebkicher in Lancaster? He is a Civil War veteran, and a good businessman. Perhaps he could be persuaded to come help us.”

Milton and Fanny gazed at her hopefully. “Do you really think he would come?” Milton asked.

“Let us write to him at once.”
