Caroline Carson drove herself into town at first light. Like so many on the ranch, she'd celebrated the arrival of Sam Kane's daughter with delight. The Kanes were good, solid folk and enormously kind to the people that worked for them. Most of the time, Caroline forgot that they were the employers. Everyone on the Flying K worked, everyone had a purpose and even though her husband, a Kane employee, passed away a few years before, they never asked her for a payment on her little home and consistently sent work her way.

It didn't hurt that for a time, the youngest Kane had been her lover. That spark, it seemed, flamed out though. In the months since his return, he'd visited her only once and then only to check on whether she needed any repairs or assistance. She missed the passion, but accepted that the younger man would find his fancy elsewhere.

She rarely went into Dorado, letting others pick up her supplies and deliver them, but with the arrival of the little Miss Molly, she wanted to make a special set of blankets and baby clothes—gifts for the family, but mostly for the baby. She had no children of her own and likely never would.

Despite the early hour, the main street hummed with sober, sedate activity. Parking in front of the General Store, she turned to climb down from the buckboard. A gentleman paused in his stroll along the boardwalk to step down and offer her a hand.

He was a stranger, but a polite one. She offered him a quick smile as his bare hand closed on her. A zing of warmth shot up her arm and for the barest of seconds, she swayed dizzily.

He braced her arm when she would have stumbled. Shaking her head quickly, she flashed another smile at him. “Thank you.”

“You're very welcome. Are you all right?” His eyes were like twin pits of darkness, but concern gentled the corners of his grin. She shrugged off the mild unease at his closeness. He'd hardly been inappropriate.

Pasting on a brighter smile, she nodded. “I'm fine. Thank you, I suppose the hour is just a little early for me.” And she'd had very little sleep the night before.

He held her hand a moment longer than was absolutely necessary and another zing of awareness skittered through her. Her stomach lurched and she sucked in a deep breath to quell the surge of lightheadedness. Extracting her hand, she fumbled an apologetic smile. “Where are my manners? I'm Caroline Carson.”

“Tyler Caldwell.” The man's hard yankee vowels gave him away, but his smile and the hand he lifted to doff his hat were as smooth as a local's. “You take care, Ms. Carson.”

“Thank you and you as well.” She watched as he settled his hat back into place and strolled away. Another flutter of uneasiness crept through her and she rubbed her hand against her stomach. Maybe she should pause at the restaurant for something to eat.

Shaking off the malaise, she headed into the store, but sweat dampened the back of her neck and she sighed.
