FORMING THICKER BEZELS

Pliers will need to be used when forming thicker bezels, because they are much harder to bend by hand. Annealing will help you bend and perfect your shape. Work carefully to not mar the metal during the forming process, because you will have to remove material to fix that.

USING DECORATIVE BEZELS

Decorative bezel wires are super fun and come in a wide range of heights and designs. They do not lend themselves to height modification like regular bezel wire because you are removing part of the design as you remove material. If you have a stone that isn’t quite high enough to use with a particular decorative wire, you can saw out some sheet metal to place underneath the stone. I’m sort of a purist, so if I am making a sterling silver piece, I will use a silver sheet to raise a stone even though it adds weight and cost. However, when I list that piece for sale, I can describe it as 100 percent sterling silver. You could use brass or copper. Assuming your cabochon is opaque, it will not be visible either way, but I do think it is good to be transparent with your customers about that. There are other items like broken CDs and sawdust that some people swear by for lifting a stone, but due to the professional nature in which I sell my work, I personally don’t use anything besides silver. However, I am not passing judgment.
