GOLD

CLAYS

Gold clays were developed at the same time as silver clays, but they always have been costlier. They are available in 22-karat and 24-karat varieties, and one variety is documented as firing at 1,290 F for 90 minutes.

Art Clay’s 22-karat gold clay fires at 1,813 F for 60 minutes, which requires a kiln. The market price of gold in recent years has caused the use of solid gold metal clay to be fairly prohibitive, and it has resulted in inventive, alternative methods to add gold accents to silver and other materials.

If you use gold clay alone, use separate brushes and metal or plastic tools that are free of seams or cracks that can harbor expensive bits of clay. Wood is not, in my opinion, a good material for tools, as the grain usually is porous and will absorb gold-laden moisture.

I also feel that 22-karat gold is preferable to 24-karat gold, not only because the gold content is less and therefore, less expensive, but because pure 24-karat gold is generally considered too soft for everyday wear for jewelry.
