MERCEDES HAS always been close to her mother. Her closeness is such that alone at a friend’s house one night, she suddenly feels that someone is standing behind her, placing a hand on her shoulder in the same way her mother used to do. Mercedes turns around, but no one is there. A few minutes later, she receives a phone call that her mother has fallen unconscious. Even if it isn’t a shock—her mother has been sick for a long time—it affects Mercedes deeply. On April 27, 2000, her mother dies at eighty-nine.4

For every time Mercedes loses someone she loves she feels the grief gets worse. But this time she knows she needs to face it head-on instead of running away from it. She tries to find the balance and allow herself the time to grieve without letting the color gray invade her. She finds comfort and strength in her last recording, Misa Criolla, which pays tribute to her mother’s strong faith in God. She receives her first Grammy, for Misa Criolla, the Latin Grammy Award for Best Folk Album.
