A study was published in the February issue of Archives of Neurology that subjected the Mediterranean diet to tests aimed at finding out its properties in improving brain function. To examine the diet, the data was taken from Hannah Gardner, Sc.D. at the University of Miami, who conducted a North Manhattan study, targeting 966 participants.

White markers hyper intensities are considered markers of chronic vessel damage. The researchers used the WMHs to obtain an analogical score against Mediterranean diet. The researchers found:

• 11.6% scored 0-2

• 15.8% scored 3

• 23% scored 4

• 23.5% scored 5

• 26.1% scored 6-9

Furthermore, the team discovered that men had higher scores than women along with those who had minimal physical activity throughout the day. Results from the study conclusively indicated that participants who consumed the greatest amount of Mediterranean diet had a lower WMHV count. The connection between brain damage and lifestyle choices like fats, exercise, smoking, etc. was also found, but the one that had the most profound affect was the intake of Mediterranean diet.
