As we have seen, almost all clinical investigations begin with a question. For example, is malathion a more effective drug for treating head lice than d‐phenothrin? Is there a difference in the mean birthweight of babies born to mothers who smoked while pregnant and those who did not? Does a cervical pessary reduce pre‐term births in women with a short cervix? And so on. In the preceding three chapters, we answered questions of this sort by calculating a confidence interval and seeing if it contains 0 (in the case of a difference) or 1 (in the case of a ratio).

We could then make statements like, “We are 95% confident that the range of values defined by the confidence interval will include the value of the population parameter,” or “The confidence interval represents a plausible range of values for the population parameter.”
