I was hunched over paperwork strewn across Dot’s breakfast table at six o’clock the next morning when she shuffled out of her bedroom wrapped in a lavender dressing gown, rollers in her pink hair.

“I thought I heard the shower running,” she commented as she filled the kettle. “You’re up early for a Saturday, aren’t you?”

“The electrician and the plumber will be at the house in half an hour, and I wanted to make extra certain I’m up to speed on the plans before they arrive.”

“Ah.” Dot pulled out her favourite mug—the one with the pink VBFYRRRBC logo printed on the side—and held up another. “Would you like tea? Perhaps some toast to go with it?”

“That sounds great. Thanks.”

As Dot made us breakfast, I returned to my study of the house plans. I was on my own today—no Logan—and although I’d assured him I had everything under control, I was nervous about supervising tradespeople without him. Against all odds, Logan had become my rock and my sounding board, and though I was fairly confident I could handle things on my own for one day, I would have liked to have him around.

It made me a little woozy when I considered how quickly things had shifted between us, and because I felt steadier with things mapped out, I’d given it some thought and was almost certain I could pinpoint the exact moment the dynamic between us changed. It was after the debacle with the curtain rod, the day I was forced to admit how badly I’d screwed up with my parents. I’d handed him what he’d always wanted: irrefutable proof that I really was the stubborn, uptight know-it-all he’d always said I was. That had been his moment to crow—and he hadn’t. He’d stepped in and stepped up without ever making me ask for his help, and now, the guy who had always made me feel too self-conscious to relax in his company had the power to melt me with only a look or a touch.

As my thoughts drifted to Logan, I recalled for the thousandth time the candlelit picnic he’d set up for me, the fight we’d had about our past, and his confession that picking on me had been his backwards way of protecting himself.

I found his revelation equal parts endearing and frustrating. As kids, we’d unwittingly set a precedent for our hostile relationship, but then our lives had taken us in different directions, and we’d never had an opportunity to outgrow it. Then there was my unintentional confession that I’d loved him once and the sex that had come after it.

Oh, God, we’d climaxed together, and the way he’d met my eyes when we did, holding me there and refusing to let me turn away…

“I know that look,” Dot said, setting a steaming cup of tea in front of me, then a plate of hot buttered toast. “You’re thinking about a boy.”

I took a sip of tea and burned my tongue while Dot took the chair next to me, watching me with a shrewd smile.
