Chapter 24

Mario and I had been together for quite some time when one night after a really good day of working on his latest book, we were lying in bed, and Mario asked, “You don’t really like sex do you?”

I frowned. “I do,” I said. “I think it’s fun.”

“Has it ever been more fun, or something more than fun for you?”

“You’re asking me if any other guys have been better in bed?” I asked.

Mario laughed. “We’re not kids,” he said, “so you can tell me the truth.”

“You told me you never want the truth,” I said laughing.

“But in this case, I want to know. I want to know how women feel about things.”

“I love pizza,” I said, smiling. “But I wouldn’t eat it 3 times a day five days a week.”

Mario was quiet. “Too much?” he asked.

“Look Mario,” I said, sitting up and leaning back against the headboard. “You have large appetites. I like that. I love your enthusiasm. You eat more than I do, you gamble with wild abandon, you have more fun.”

“What are you saying?” he asked.

“I’m saying that there’s never been a man with better technique or equipment long enough to touch my soul.”

I just shook my head. I knew I was missing something about the whole sex thing, but no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t understand how it sucked everyone in. I mean I spent years when I was young reading everything there was to read about technique, about lovemaking, about what to do and what not to do. I loved mastery so I learned it well. But still, I didn’t really get its allure.

Some of the smartest women I knew—once they fell into bed with a man—seemed to be crippled by the power of the connection. They truly seemed to lose their minds. If the sex was good, they were sunk, they would give up everything for that man. If the sex was bad, even a good man couldn’t keep them.

“So, you like sex, but just not that much?” he asked. “You’re a good Catholic girl. Religion has ruined more women than anything else.”

“Wrong,” I said. “That’s not it. I just don’t get it. It can even feel good for a short time, but that’s it.”

“That’s not enough?” he asked.

“It’s fine,” I said. “It’s just not more than other important parts of any relationship.”

“You know what men really want from women?” Mario asked. By now he was sitting up too. He reached over and took a cigar off his nightstand, put it in his mouth, but didn’t light it.

“Nope,” I said. “Surrender probably. Power mostly.”

Mario looked surprised. “It’s the one place I don’t play for power,” he said. “I know there are some guys like that, the kind of a guy who sleeps with a girl and brags about it. But that guy is a creep in other ways. It doesn’t work that way for me.”

I laughed. “That’s how it used to work for me,” I said. “I was like one of those guys who scratches a notch in his rifle each time he kills a bear.
