“Begin your building with a strong foundation.”

When you first dive into the waters of school reform, you will experience waves of urgency. The depth of need will overwhelm you. There will be many who will immediately want to splash about on the high school campus. Avoid these well-intentioned efforts. Begin with a critical goal in mind—a solidly financed program.

Much of the initial resistance to the High School Inc. Academies came from those who did not see a financial gain for instructional outcomes. The High School Inc. Foundation did not operate as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit/charity organization until five years after the High School Inc. Academies had been formed.

Thus funds for student activities, competition, curriculum development, and staffing had to be borne by the occasional donations of good-hearted donors and contributors. Worse, the process to receive funds and distribute them to specific High School Inc. needs was not in place.
