Figure 7.3 How systematic review differs from conventional literature reviews

Systematic review

Conventional literature review

1. ‘A clearly stated set of objectives with pre-defined eligibility criteria for studies’

The scope and objectives of the review are often rather vaguely defined, with ‘open borders’ in some directions and restrictive limits applied in others.

2. ‘An explicit, reproducible methodology’

No explicit methodology is apparent – reviews are often ‘scrambled together’ from partial or shallow searches of only a fraction of available resources.
