Reflection and Notes

Team reflection occurs when planning the unit and during the unit, as you remind each other of strategies to include and consider during the day-to-day details of lesson planning. These are the notes your team takes as it plans together.

Equally important is the intentional reflection after the unit is complete. At the end of every unit, your sixth-grade team discusses student progress and

considers adjusting the unit in the future based on the evidence of student learning resulting from your team practices throughout the unit.

Figure 3.10 (page 54) illustrates an example of team reflection and notes during planning and after the unit of instruction. (See figure 2.11, page 31, for the template with directions.) Key considerations include listing the essential learning standards, making planning notes, and determining next steps.

The protocol in figure 3.10 (page 54) serves as an archive of your team successes, a living plan of next steps, and an honest dialogue about what is currently working or not working for students. As you build trust among your team, consider the following guiding questions for supporting transparent and honest dialogue.

• Where in the data do you see a trend to celebrate?

• After looking at your classroom data, what questions would you like to ask your teammates?

• What would you like to know more about to support one another’s mathematical teaching practices?

• Where in the data do you see evidence of a need to adjust your team’s approach to teaching the unit standards?

Questions such as these encourage your team to openly reflect on the team’s data and prepare for moving forward instructionally. Through reflection and routine sharing, your team will discover small, yet impactful, practices that help reach more students.

Your sixth-grade team has now navigated through each element of a mathematics unit design. You started by identifying the unit’s essential learning standards and pacing the lessons and assessments using a unit calendar. Together, your team agreed on and clarified prior knowledge and vocabulary and notations. Your team also selected resources, tasks, tools, and technology to support lesson planning. You have included a process for recording notes when planning and for reflecting on the outcomes of the unit. Your team has now successfully generated the information needed to complete the Mathematics Unit Planner for your ratios and rates unit.
