Chapter Seventeen

Wedding Party Bonding Moments

Note to self: a co-ed wedding shower isn’t the worst idea. At least, not the way Katie and Jesse do it. The casual setting is elevated by the rental tent and tables, and the decorations—especially the fairy lights, courtesy of Katie and yours truly. The food is plentiful and not fussy. No petit fours or cucumber sandwiches in sight.

In fact, the main attraction turns out to be a shrimp boil. The Bourdet family (Jesse’s side) and the Mahone family (Katie’s side) teamed up to bring in a caterer that specializes in the typically coastal tradition. There’s a huge pot set over a fire and a long table covered in thick brown paper nearby. Whenever the massive pot of shrimp, corn, and potatoes is done, the caterer lifts out an inner basket out of the pot that drains the cooking liquid away before he spills it all across the table.

Everyone has an aluminum pie plate in lieu of a plate and we grab our fill of the spicy delicacies whenever we want. The seating area under the tent is lively with people. There are no assigned seats, and the constant action at the boiling pot has the guests circulating regularly. There are plenty of beers on ice available as well as a signature cocktail they’re calling Hurricane Katie.

“If all bridal showers are like this, I’m going to be crashing them from now on,” Charlie tells me while we wait for the big basket of shrimp to be dispensed onto the table.

“Oh yeah, just like this.” I take a sip from my bottle of beer and grin at him.

“You’ve been holding out on me.”

“A girl’s got to have a few secrets, don’t you think?”

We join in the cheer when the cook spreads the food across the brown papered table, and wait for a chance to grab up some steaming hot shrimp.

“I wish more of the Michigan people could have come.” Although Katie and Jesse would have gladly welcomed any of our college friends who could come, they hadn’t expected anyone but friends, family, and the wedding party to make the journey to Minneapolis for their shower. They were already asking people to make the trek to Minocqua for the wedding. So Charlie and I were the only people from U of M there besides the bride and groom. Who were, understandably, a little busy.

With our plates freshly loaded, we walk back to the tent to find a place to sit. Charlotte, one of the other bridesmaids, waves us over to join her. I’d never met her before, since she was a high school friend, but she’d been friendly and welcoming since we were introduced earlier today.

“I think I might explode,” she announces, patting her belly as we take our seats.

“I’m full,” I agree. “But it’s so good!”

Tom joins us at the table with his own plate full. “I don’t see why they don’t just get married tonight,” he says. “How are they going to top this for the wedding?”

“Right?” Charlotte agrees, flicking her dark hair behind her shoulders.
