Thursday afternoon Colton climbed in his truck and tossed his cowboy hat in the seat. Sweat beaded on his forehead, and he wiped it with the back of his arm. He wished he could change clothes before heading into town, but he was already later than he planned. And maybe he was anxious to get to the church. He told himself it was to get started on the work, but he knew it was because of the person he wanted to see.

The drive to church felt longer than normal, and he found himself saying a prayer. “God, I don’t know what You have planned here, but I pray that You will lead me in the right direction. We don’t know each other that well, so help me to go slow and do things right.”

When he pulled up in front of the church, he jumped out and was almost to the door before he remembered his tools. He smacked himself in the forehead. He was here to do a job, after all. He should actually look like he knew what he was doing.

Tools in hand, he walked to the door. The corners of his mouth lifted as he gave thanks that Grace was responsible for keeping his list of tasks. Opening the door, his smile grew at the sight of her.

She looked up from the book she held in her hand and quickly set it aside.

“Afternoon,” Colton said.

“Good afternoon.” Grace smiled at him as if she were pleased to see him.

Colton hoped she was. “Good book?” he asked.

“Oh.” She blushed. “Yes, it is. I didn’t mean to get caught reading. I just had a lull and thought I would read a chapter.”

Colton chuckled. “I’m sure it’s fine. You’re not working at a fortune five-hundred company. I’m sure you have some downtime.”

Grace gave a laugh that sounded like relief. “It’s true.” She leaned over her desk and whispered, “Sometimes, I feel guilty that they pay me. The job isn’t hard at all.”

“But it’s necessary. You’ve taken a burden off of Pastor that allows him to focus completely on ministering to the church. For him to stop and answer a phone call or print the bulletin took a lot of time and mental energy from serving the congregation. Now he knows you are here to handle those things, and it frees him up.”

“Really? Did he say that?” Grace’s eyes were wide.

“That’s the reason we discussed hiring someone in the first place. And I know you’ve done your job well. I can see the relief on his face.”

“That’s nice to hear. I’ve never really been helpful before. I won’t feel guilty anymore, now that you’ve told me that.”

Colton’s stomach twisted in joy and pain—joy that he had encouraged her and pain that she felt she had never been helpful. “You’re helpful here. And I heard you’re coming out to help Mom with dinner tonight. She’s so excited to have an extra hand.”

Grace laughed. “I’m not sure she’ll want my extra hands after tonight. I’m likely to mess things up, but I’ll sure try.
