CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Erin went to wash up quickly and slipped into one of Steve’s t-shirts. The t-shirt was freshly laundered and smelled of laundry detergent and Steve.

Crawling into bed, Erin inhaled a deep breath and smiled. Steve’s unique scent was all over the bedroom, and she loved wrapping herself in his scent. It made her feel safe, and loved.

It was a strange yet wonderful feeling, and she couldn’t explain it. She knew she had only just met Steve, yet they seemed to share a deep friendship and connection. He was sweet, sexy and protective, and Erin realized that he had all the qualities that she would want in a life mate.

“Don’t let your imagination run wild,” Erin admonished herself. “He’s just being a perfect gentleman and a Good Samaritan.”

She closed her eyes and almost immediately, images began to play on the back of her eyelids.

The images came and went, and Erin wasn’t quite sure if she was asleep or awake. Her jumbled, chaotic thoughts began to weave themselves into a memory, which morphed into a movie in her mind…

Erin found herself back in her apartment. She was a little girl, and she was in her bed, hiding under the covers with the pillow over her ears. But still she could hear the heated argument from the living room.

Her mom was crying and Tom was yelling as usual. But this time, his tone was meaner, more threatening and dangerous.

“Are you going to give me the money or not?” Tom shrieked and Erin heard something crash to the floor.

“No. I won’t give you any more money,” her mom answered. “We hardly have enough...”

“You’re lying! I know you have some savings!”

“That money is for Erin’s education,” her mom shouted. “I will make sure she finishes school and that she will always have a roof over her head and food in her belly!”

“Give me the money right now!” Tom bellowed. “Do you think you can fight me? I will kill you...”

Erin threw off the pillow and scrambled out of bed. She wasn’t going to just hide under the covers while Tom killed her mother in cold blood!

Yanking her bedroom door open, Erin ran out to the living room and threw her arms around her mom. “Don’t hurt her!” Erin screamed.

Her mom immediately pushed Erin behind her and said, “What are you doing out here? Go back to bed, sweetheart.”

Erin looked up at her mother’s tear-streaked face and saw the fierce love in her eyes. “I won’t let him kill you, Mom,” Erin said, holding on tighter to her mother.

“Stupid girl,” Tom snarled at Erin. “You’re the reason why she won’t give me the money. She’s saving it for you!” he spat. “Useless little bitch!”

“Don’t speak to her like that,” her mom hissed angrily and pointed to the door. “Get out. Leave right now.”

“Not without the money,” Tom replied and made a grab for Erin. But her mother shielded her and Erin saw the flash of claws as her mother cried out in pain.

“Mom!” Erin screamed.

“I’m okay,” her mother panted as blood dripped from her arm.
