Calming the Storm

(Mark 4:35–41)

On that day, when evening came, He said to them, “Let us go over to the other side.” Leaving the crowd, they took Him along with them in the boat, just as He was; and other boats were with Him. And there arose a fierce gale of wind, and the waves were breaking over the boat so much that the boat was already filling up. Jesus Himself was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?” And He got up and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Hush, be still.” And the wind died down and it became perfectly calm. And He said to them, “Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?” They became very much afraid and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?” (4:35–41)

The Scriptures boldly declare the deity of the Lord Jesus Christ. The apostle John explicitly states that truth at the outset of his gospel: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God” (John 1:1–2; cf. v. 18). Seven centuries earlier, the prophet Isaiah declared of the Messiah, “His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace” (Isa. 9:6). In recounting the birth of Christ, Matthew cited the Old Testament to explain that “‘they shall call His name Immanuel,’ which translated means, ‘God with us’” (Matt. 1:23). After Jesus’ death and resurrection, upon seeing the risen Savior, Thomas enthusiastically addressed Him as, “My Lord and my God!” (John 20:28). The apostle Paul said of Jesus that “He is the image of the invisible God” (Col. 1:15) and “in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily” (Col. 2:9 NKJV). Consequently, believers are those who eagerly await the return of “our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus” (Titus 2:13).

As the incarnate Word of God (cf. John 1:14), Jesus Himself repeatedly affirmed His divinity. He often referred to Himself as the “Son of Man” (cf. Matt. 8:20; Mark 2:28; Luke 6:22; John 9:35–37), a messianic title derived from Daniel 7:13–14 (NKJV), where the “one like the Son of Man” appears as an equal with “the Ancient of Days” (cf. Matt. 25:31; 26:64). He similarly described Himself as the “Son of God,” a title clearly indicating His divine nature and eternal union with God the Father. As He explained in Matthew 11:27, “All things have been handed over to Me by My Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father; nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son wills to reveal Him.” In John 5:25–26, speaking of His divine authority, He said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live.
