INVITATIONS AND REPLIES
The letters RSVP are often written or printed near the bottom of an invitation. They stand for Répondez, s'il vous plaît. The words are French, and they mean “Please respond.” And they really mean you must give an answer.
If an invitation states “regrets only,” it is necessary to reply only if you do not plan to attend. Remember, the host/hostess will definitely expect you at the appointed time if you do not answer the RSVP. If a phone number is given, you may telephone your answer; but if there is no phone number, you are expected to write your answer. A simple fold-over note is appropriate for this purpose.
