TRUTH AND CONSEQUENCES

Stories of HPV Long-Term Consequences

I could repeat stories like these, over and over again. Some of the details are changed to protect the privacy of those who have shared their personal pain.

I met this young mother at her request for breakfast one morning, and she began sharing a story I’ve heard all too often. She was a strong Christian and her husband was in ministry. They had met in Bible school when she was 22 and he was 24. He had come to Christ in college and later heard God’s call to ministry. Prior to his conversion, he’d had sex with a few girls in high school. He explained this to her, asked her forgiveness, and said his past was behind him. They were in love, so she decided to marry him. Their pre-marriage counseling consisted of discussing how they would handle money and household chores and some theological groundwork on the sanctity of marriage. But the past was not discussed. It was the past and was to be forgotten.

Three years after they married, this young woman became pregnant with their first child. About three months into the pregnancy, Ann noticed some growths around her vagina. She went to her doctor, who said she had genital warts that he would simply remove with laser surgery. She had them removed, but the next month, more warts had grown back. She continued to have the warts aggressively treated with a laser every three to four weeks. The laser surgery was painful, and left her vaginal area severely scarred and without feeling. Her doctor had to break the news to her that she had a viral STD for which there was no cure, and that she would simply have to keep getting the warts treated. Ann couldn’t understand how her husband could have no warts if he was the one who had given her the virus. As the doctor explained it, the virus reacts differently in different people’s bodies. The hormonal changes during pregnancy probably triggered the onset and growth of the warts in her. He also explained that in order not to infect her baby with the virus, she would need to have a Caesarean section-she wouldn’t be able to deliver the child normally.
