AUTOMATIC WRITING

Another way spirits of the dead supposedly communicate with the living is through what is known as “automatic writing.” This involves holding a pen or pencil loosely in your hand and letting “the spirits” move it across the paper.

Some experts say that almost anyone who is willing to yield himself to the spirits can learn to be adept at automatic writing. All it takes is the ability to relax, empty yourself of conscious thought (sound familiar?), and allow the spirits to speak through you.

As you can imagine, the same dangers associated with Ouija boards are also connected to automatic writing. Those who believe it’s actually the power of the subconscious mind that takes control warn that a psychotic break and mental illness can result. Dr. J.B. Rhine, a Duke University psychologist who spent many years investigating occult phenomena, dismissed automatic writing as spontaneous “motor automatisms” and believed it was caused by inner conflicts, repressions, and obsessions that came to the surface during the process.9 This may be true in some cases, but automatic writing does involve opening oneself up to the possibility of invasion by supernatural forces.

And many of the messages received through automatic writing are in exact agreement with messages being passed on through spirit mediums, “angelic” visitors, and beings who supposedly come from outer space. Again and again, Christ is hailed as a great teacher, but never as Savior. Frequently we’re urged to unlock the power that lies within us. And we’re told the afterworld is a peaceful, happy place for everyone, regardless of what has been done or believed in this life. In other words, we’re told we might as well chuck most of the Bible, because what it says really doesn’t matter.
