“Home, this is Away. Where’s the rope?”

Austin sighed. He had seen this coming. “Away, I’m going to see what’s wrong.”

He lunged up and hurried under the blanket-door and into the hall. The walkie crackled with a start, “What’s wrong? Come in.”

It was loud. The voice seemed like an explosion in the silence of the dark hall. Austin quickly turned the walkie off and glanced both ways down the hall. He heard someone stirring in a bed. He had to hurry.

He jogged to the bathroom and almost ran into Ryan at the urinal. “What are you doing?”

Ryan glared at him. “I’m peeing! Don’t peek!”

Austin rolled his eyes and ran to the window. He twisted the lock and pulled the window up. Leaning out, he saw the four boys; they waved.

Working urgently, he tied the rope to the radiator and threw its long coils outside. It snaked outside and snapped taut. Good to go.

A toilet flushed behind him and he turned quickly. Ryan still stood by the urinal. He hadn’t finished. Austin turned further. A different toilet had flushed. One of the stalls.

Austin froze. Someone else was in there. One of them? A purple? A counselor? He swung around and grabbed at the rope; hand over hand, he pulled it back up through the window. He glanced over his shoulder. Bare feet in the stall, pulling up shorts. He had no time.

The last of the rope flew through the window and into the bathroom. He knelt to the radiator and scratched at the knot with his fingers. It was too tight! He couldn’t get it!

The stall door opened behind him.

No!

Suddenly, the door slammed back shut. Ryan stood against it, his shoulder pressed firmly and his bare feet trying to find traction on the tile; he nodded frantically at Austin.

Austin snapped back around and started at the knot.

“Hey! What are you doing? Let me out!”

It was Tucker. That explained the stink. And if he saw what they were up to, he was sure to turn them in.

Austin pulled a loose end through and the knot quickly loosened. Tucker hit against the door and Ryan was sent sliding across the tile. He quickly regained balance and slammed back into the door, sending Tucker flailing back into the stall.

Austin’s fingers worked like a frenzied pianist and the rope fell from the radiator. He grabbed it from the ground and threw it into the third stall. A moment later, he snagged the door and swung it shut.

Ryan saw the success and opened Tucker’s stall door just in time. Tucker came barreling out, his panicked face searching for the door he expected to ram. His body flung across the bathroom like a missile and slid along the tile to the wall underneath the sinks.

Austin and Ryan shared a long panicked look as Tucker groaned on the grimy floor. Then, in unison, they burst from the bathroom together, leaving the larger boy behind.

They scurried into the hall but skidded to a stop on the carpet in an instant.
