The best way to fight sin is to flee temptation.

It was Friday night. I was tired of not being invited to the “fun” parties. My new friend was interested in a guy who invited her to a party. I agreed to drive since I wouldn’t be drinking.

When we arrived, I knew this was not the place for me. I was sitting alone at a stranger’s kitchen table when a guy sat down and invited me to a back bedroom. I snapped out of my lethargy, walked into the living room, and told her it was time to go. I couldn’t take any more.

I didn’t realize it then, but that’s exactly what Paul had written to his disciple Timothy in the Scripture above.

1. Run from evil. Temptation always grabs us at the heart level, promising us something that we crave or desire, but these promises come up empty after a while. So how do you know what is evil? If you pay close attention, when you are coming close to an unwise decision or a tempting situation, the Holy Spirit will warn your soul to run, to flee, to say no to any ungodly situation. Our job is to stay aware, listen, and run.

2. Stay close to righteousness. As you are running away from evil, don’t stop until you know you’ve started running toward Christ. Jesus influences our desires to want what is right. Are you spending time with Him, allowing Him to create a clean heart, one that seeks righteousness? You cannot flee temptation without focusing on Jesus.

3. Find a fellowship. Sometimes you may feel sad or lonely as you walk away from sin. Find a companion for these lonely times. But be careful whom you choose. Not everyone will encourage you on your path to purity. You are searching for someone who will support you in your walk with Christ, who will stand with you on your journey of sexual purity.

Although I escaped a bad situation by the skin of my chinny-chin-chin, I didn’t make a wise decision to go to this party to begin with. I let my insecurity, my desire to win my friends’ approval, put me in a bad situation. I should have run and headed in the other direction. I shouldn’t have looked, considered, or flirted with the idea of going.

Flee! This strategy is effective because you are not strong enough to fight sexual sin and temptation in your own power. But remember that the power that raised Jesus Christ from the dead lives within you. He is ready to help you run, stay close, and find a friend.
