The big message in this verse is that if your friend calls herself a believer and doesn’t act like one, then you definitely shouldn’t be hanging out with her. What does it say about your faith if your entourage is filled with false believers, or lukewarm ones at best? According to this verse, you can’t allow it any longer. You are who you hang out with. And so if she calls herself a believer and is being sexually immoral, partying, drinking, or making idols for herself of her clothes, her money, her car, or anything else, you can’t be her best friend anymore, or you are no better than her.

God’s ultimate message on this subject is, “Do not be deceived: ‘Evil company corrupts good habits’” (1 Corinthians 15:33 NKJV). See, God knows that we become like who we hang out with and we also make others think we already are like those we hang out with. If your believing friend isn’t being faithful, she is bringing you and your God down. This is serious business; it isn’t as easy as just saying, “Oh well, she’ll get better.” She might get better, but it might take you telling her that you can’t hang out with her anymore for her to do it. Don’t let her put a guilt trip on you and tell you, “You just think you’re better than me.” That’s not it at all. You just think your God demands more sanctification of you. More setting apart. He isn’t pleased with the actions you’ve allowed in your life, so you need to distance yourself from them. I know this sounds like such an extreme thing to do, but if your faith isn’t extreme, then what good is it? Part of being faithful involves pain. It hurts when we separate from the world.

If your friend is not a Christian, the story is a bit different. You can’t go around avoiding every sinner in the world, because you are in the world to save sinners. You can’t just dump her because she’s living in sin; that’s what nonbelievers do—they live in sin. But you can’t spend all your time with her, either. She can’t be your best friend because she’s not in agreement with you on faith. The truth is that she can never share in the deepest part of your heart. She can’t understand your choices, your actions, your hopes, your motivations, or your dreams, because they are all based on your faith, something she thinks is nonsense. The Bible says, “Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness?” (2 Corinthians 6:14 NKJV). The truth of this word is that you can’t have communion with darkness. You can’t be best friends with nonbelievers because that supposes some kind of agreement, and obviously when it comes to the most important thing in the world—faith in God—you don’t agree. She will never truly understand you because of who you are: a believer in Christ Jesus.
