Chapter Eight

“I need a word with you.”

Thad looked up from the expense report he’d been reviewing. Charlotte Van Son. Great! He had to get through this paperwork and over to the resort site this morning. He didn’t need another confrontation with her.

A wave of uneasiness flowed over him. He hoped she wasn’t here to chastise him for kissing Mandy in public the other night. He never knew what she’d latch on to, nor where she got her information, but she seemed to know everything that went on in Whitmore Mills, day or night. He was a grown man. Why was he feeling so guilty about one little kiss? He didn’t know. But he was. And he had a feeling it had nothing to do with Charlotte.

“Charlotte. Good morning. What can I do for you?”

She waved off his greeting. “Just look at them. Have you ever seen anything so disgusting?”

“What?” He had no idea what she was talking about.

She jabbed her finger toward his office window, pointing to the park below. “That,” she sputtered. “What are you going to do about that? Or do I have to take care of it myself, as usual?”

Like he needed Mrs. Van Son to take care of anything. He spun his chair around to see a group doing aerobics. “That’s Mandy’s Mothers’ Class.”

“Mothers’ Class?”

“Yes, the aerobics class she’s giving for the women who bring their children to the summer recreation program. It was in the program plan.”

“I know, and I didn’t think it was a good idea when I saw it there. I like it even less now. They’re. . . they’re half naked, some of them. What does that say to our children?”

Half naked? He squinted out the morning sun to get a better look. Mandy had on a form-fitting two-piece blue and red aerobics suit. He watched her kick, jump, and move her arms in rhythm to music he could almost hear in his head. Up, down, in, out. Her movements were fluid and effortless. Not so for many of her class participants, some of whom were several steps behind her.

“Ahem.”

He’d almost forgotten Mrs. Van Son. Thad took another second to finish scanning the group. Most of the women had on leotards, sweats, or shorts and T-shirts. “I don’t see anything objectionable.” He turned to face her and the pile of statements on his desk.

“What about all that bouncing? My grandson and other high school boys working on the park maintenance have to be exposed to that?”

He doubted that Charlotte’s grandson or the other boys would really mind seeing Mandy put her class through its paces. However, the mention of her grandson sent a caution warning through Thad. A widow for as long as Thad could remember, Charlotte ruled her extended family with an iron hand. If she were unhappy about something concerning her grandson, she’d be down at the bank in a flash to tell her son Charles. Since Charles and his loan committee still had his resort loan application under consideration, Thad had to walk a fine line in dealing with her.
