Pay close attention to pick direction in the B section, as changing from one string to another on the up-stroke can be challenging (see Chapter 5).

NEWGRASS

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, progressive bluegrass or newgrass music was introduced to a new generation by artists such as John Hartford, Newgrass Revival (featuring Sam Bush), Old and in the Way (featuring David Grisman, Jerry Garcia and Peter Rowan), and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. These long-haired hippies had authentic bluegrass chops and took the music to the rock-and-roll audience on the coattails of Jerry Garcia’s popularity from the Grateful Dead.

The seeds of this movement actually lay in the early 1960s, when Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys started to play college campuses. Folk music was experiencing a revival, and it seemed like a good way to expand the awareness of bluegrass.

By the early 1970s, this new generation of progressive bluegrass bands was fusing bluegrass with pop, rock and jazz styles, straying away from traditional fiddle-based rhythms. Some elements of this new music included the use of non-traditional bluegrass instruments, chord changes that sounded more like pop music, and extended improvisational solo sections. Even though these modern musicians broke away from the tradition, many are great musicians and studied the masters.
