The first example says what can be done. The second example says can’t be done and even leaves some doubt about whether it will be done in the allotted time. Can-do language shows that you can act and plan to act. It shows that you’re prepared to get work done and to provide service — a focus that helps teams perform well.

Say what you will do

When someone, for example, suggests Friday as a deadline for certain work, and you say, “I’ll try to get it done by Friday” or “Maybe I’ll get it done by Friday,” the other person walks away with little confidence the job will be done by Friday. Compare that to the firm commitment, “I will have it done by Friday.” Of course, if you have grave doubts that you can deliver, you need to negotiate the deadline. Will-do language communicates commitment and certainty.
