The Meridians

The Meridian System essentially explains how we live and why we become sick.

What makes meridian therapy and Chinese Medicine so different to western practice is the basic tenet that you must first identify and treat the root cause, along with the whole person and not just address the symptoms. It is a holistic approach that considers each individual on the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual levels.

“Look deep into nature and then you will understand everything.” (Albert Einstein)

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, there are thousands of acupuncture points located throughout the body that facilitate the circulation of chi (pronounced ‘chee’), blood, body fluids and conscious intelligence. We’ve already established that the Japanese call it ‘ki’ (pronounced ‘key’) and the Indians describe the movement of energy as ‘prana’ where life force channels to the chakras via thousands of specific points throughout the body called ‘nadis’. TCM has ‘ki’ flowing through the meridians. Same, but different.

Whilst the chakras function purely at an etheric or subtle level, the meridians resonate both physically and subtly. For instance, if a meridian is blocked on a conceptual or subtle level, it will also be detectable in the body, whereas if a chakra is disconnected, it is only discernable on the ‘invisible’ plane with no tangible physicality.

This distribution or network of ki is called the Meridian System and it looks like a giant energised web, linking together all the different areas of the body and all our systems (circulatory, respiratory, urinary, muscular, skeletal/joint, endocrine, immune, lymphatic, digestive and reproductive). They form interconnected pathways linking organs, skin, flesh, muscle and bones, as one unified being. They also relate to our mental, emotional and spiritual bodies and particular body trigger points relate to specific emotions, mind patterns and concepts as well.

Each meridian has a starting point and an ending (or opening) point and runs from deep within the organ bodies and internal systems to stem out through major tendrils or branches into gradually smaller ones that eventually end up on the skin surface. They are bilaterally symmetrical and each one has a distinct left and distinct right.

Meridians are also either deep or superficial. The deep ones connect the 12 pairs and the Governing and Conception vessels, to the interior of the body. They link the superficial channels to the visceral organs and the brain. Trigger points (or acupoints) on the surface of the body, are used to access the deep body for instance. Meridians via the deep are also comprehensively linked across the midline of the body, particularly at the ventral (centre) midline. Many other meridians send deep branches to the midline where they can meet and then cross, creating the most incredibly complex and intuitive meridial map.

Like a network of rivers nourishing a landscape, the meridians are the channels through which ki flows, to nourish and energise the human body. These channels exist within the subtle body – you won’t find them on the operating table. Although meridians work as a channel system, carrying and distributing ki, they are not blood vessels and have no anatomical channel structure.
