Trace is accelerated, making the soap too thick for creating desired designs. In this event, work quickly to get the batter into the mold. There may not be enough time to add color or designs. After pouring, firmly tap the mold on a hard surface to release air bubbles from the batter.

The batter overheats once poured into the mold, which may lead to cracking. Check the soap occasionally for beginning signs of this. If it is beginning to crack, place the uncovered soap mold in the refrigerator or freezer. If the soap is still soft, sometimes the crack can be smoothed over by hand (be sure to wear gloves).

The batter seizes (becomes rock hard) in the mixing pot. The only recourse is to get it in the mold as quickly as possible.

Although the quality of a fragrance oil and its behavior in cold process soapmaking are important, scents are largely a matter of preference. There is no one-size-fits-all rule of thumb. Therefore, it is good to have a little bit of each category (floral, clean, masculine, fruity, foody).

Choose a favorite scent within each category, then stick with those which are tried and true. Ongoing sampling gets to be expensive. Consistently purchasing from a small number of suppliers will also save money in the long run. There are many good suppliers. Crafter’s Choice offers quality, competitively-priced oils with free shipping on orders of a certain amount. Rustic Escentuals and Brambleberry (somewhat pricey, depending on the oil) are also good, quality suppliers.

Additional considerations regarding fragrance oils:

Essential oils and fragrance oils can be mixed. Follow the same suggested usage amounts for each oil as when used separately.
