Based on observations of discussions, skits, book talks, and group activities – and on student interviews and questionnaires – the majority of students clearly recognized and thrived on the opportunities they had in this class to demonstrate their knowledge in a variety of ways. As one student said:

The best way for me to share something, you know, I just got to talk it out, you know some people draw, do other things, but I gotta talk to somebody, tell ’em.

(Student Interview, 5/29/91)

During the second year, the assisting observer commented on one of the student’s special talents. At the time, this student was reading on the third grade reading level and was struggling with writing:

I found that Jerry was superb at the map exercise and had little trouble with the instructions after a little help starting. I think that he would be good as a “map expert” – helping other students with problems with the map exercises. In this way, his ability could be recognized.

(Observer’s Notes, 5/15/92)
