Adding a metallic edge.

Gently creating texture.

Smooth out the foil so that it is flat but retains the criss-cross folds you have just created. You will find the strip of foil is now an irregular shape. This is one reason why we cut it larger than the surface onto which it will be attached.

Flattening out the foil before applying double-sided tape.

Now unroll a length of double-sided tape and attach it to the dull side of the tin foil. You can make the length of tape run slightly over the foil strip onto your cutting mat. Then cut it with your scalpel.

If you find your cutting mat is getting a buildup of bits of tape or residue, use a metal rule to gently scrape it off and a product such as Clean Art or a little white spirit or lighter fuel to clean your mat. Then wipe over with a damp cloth.

Place your long metal rule along the length of the double-sided tape. You can place it along the exact edge of the tape or to guarantee a straight line, just below the edge so that when you run the blade along it, you cut into the tape as well as the foil. This also has the advantage of making sure the foil won’t snag as it is surprisingly fragile especially if your blade isn’t of premium sharpness.

Depending how big your piece of foil needs to be, you may need parallel strips of double-sided tape. Having cut one strip, place the next strip exactly edge to edge and cut to size in the same way.
