Chapter 7

Band Together

You get to the point where you’re tired of practicing and playing alone. You want to change what you’re doing, or change someone else’s music. Then you start working together to bring something unique. That’s just a great feeling.

—Greg Field, jazz drummer and retired network administrator

Are you uncertain about forming a band? It could be fun, but then again . . .

Doing what’s familiar is easy and comfortable. Don’t we all have our routines and musical crutches? Stuart Koplowitz, who enjoys playing with friends but feels more assured playing alone, says that “there are mental blocks—not wanting to jump in and play with other people for fear that you’ll expose how limited you may be.”

But an ensemble can offer ideas and possibilities that you hadn’t considered on your own. Multiple instruments, voices, and brains create synergy. They multiply the joy as well. That’s worth reaching for.
