GROUNDWORKS AND GRAVESTONES

While these various coats of paint are being allowed to dry, it is now time to turn from the church, which we will see in all its completed glory shortly, to the groundwork into which it is embedded. Starting with the wall behind the church, we see how it supports the adjacent road (Photo 338). It is formed from a few off-cuts of a very poor quality, vacuum-formed, rectangular stone sheet by Squires but only because it saved wasting a better-quality product where it hardly showed! To be fair, by the time one has painted it, added greenery and a row of dishevelled head-stones, this quick ‘impression’ of what you would expect to find there is more than adequate for our purposes and after all, it can only be seen by people deliberately peering over the church’s roof to see what’s there, and satisfying that kind of curiosity is of course the only good reason for bothering with it in the first place.
