So what’s the first thing you are going to do when you get back to your places … John?

Thanks, John. What’s the next step … Sarah?

Thanks, Sarah. Why do we need to do that … Myra?

7. Find your own faults

As well as modelling to students how to do the practical work, we should also show them how to find faults with the equipment they are using and how to fix them. This will save you a huge amount of time during practical lessons as it will avoid you having to move from group to group showing them how to solve the same problem. For example, when you are introducing electrical circuits for the first time, model to the students what to do if they set up their circuit and the light bulb isn’t working (e.g. try replacing the bulb, the power supply or the leads – in sequence). Similarly, when they use microscopes for the first time, show them how to find their sample and then focus in carefully by starting with the low objective lens and moving up.

You could link this with the idea of comparative modelling. Set up two similar electrical circuits, but have some intentional faults in one (e.g. a voltmeter in series rather than in parallel) and ask the students to identify what is wrong with one of the circuits.
