Natural Dyes
Using dyes from natural materials requires time and patience, but is rewarding. The only dye I know of that does not call for a mordant (fixative) is black walnut hulls. The colors obtained from natural materials, without using a mordant, are not as longlasting nor as vivid, but paler and more subtle. I prefer them that way and feel better not using the many chemicals required in mordanting.
To use black walnut hulls:
Soak ½ pound of walnut hulls overnight in 3–4 gallons of water.
The next day boil the hulls in the water for an hour.
Let cool, then strain the dye through cheesecloth.
Wet the reed, and leave it in the dye until it is the desired shade.
To get a darker brown, try more hulls or less water.
This procedure can be used with coffee, tea, or any other natural materials.
